What is Digital Signage?

Digital Signage is a phrase coined to describe the use of a Display Device driven by a Media Player to present a variety of information, entertainment or advertising (called collectively Media) to an audience who are in a position to view such a display - normally for a relatively short time. The Media Player is generally updated with new media via digital file transfer - either manually using portable memory modules or via a computer network such as the Internet or a network owner's Intranet.

Display Devices can be:
  • A large format LCD screen/s
  • A Projector
  • A computer-like device with varying media rendering and storage capability.

Education

Digital Signage can be used in education, from Primary Schools through to Higher Education establishments. Through the use of screens placed in reception areas, staff rooms, canteens and boarding houses Digital Signage has been a proven method to communicate to pupils, students, staff and guests. Examples of information used in these environments are sports news, menus, timetable/room changes and photos of school plays etc.

Corporate

Digital Signage is becoming commonplace in the corporate world as a means to communicate to both internal and external staff as well as visitors and customers. Staff-facing screens can inform about call statistics in a call centre, sales targets in a business or provide relevant news information on the trading floor of a bank.

Retail

When people think of Digital Signage it is probably when they encounter it in the Retail environment. Content in this sector can vary from being highly informational, for example listing features of the latest mobile phone, to inspirational, showing images intended to resonate with the viewer, for example pictures of a car rally shown at a performance car dealership.
